Honoring Memorial Day
As we gather with family and friends this Memorial Day weekend, all of us at Gary Marshall Insurance Agency encourage everyone to take a moment to remember the true meaning of Memorial Day — honoring the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving our country.
The Meaning Behind Memorial Day
Memorial Day was originally known as “Decoration Day” and began after the Civil War as a way to honor fallen soldiers by decorating their graves with flowers and flags. In 1971, Memorial Day officially became a federal holiday observed on the last Monday in May.
A few meaningful facts about Memorial Day:
Memorial Day specifically honors military personnel who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces.
At 3:00 PM local time on Memorial Day, Americans are encouraged to observe the National Moment of Remembrance.
The tradition of placing flags at military gravesites continues today at cemeteries across the country.
Memorial Day weekend also marks the unofficial beginning of summer travel season in the United States.
