Temps are going to be dropping down all over Delmarva and it is going to be COLD! Leaving a faucet or two dripping is probably a great idea to help prevent a pipe burst.
🚨 Burst or Frozen Pipe? Here’s What to Do — Step by Step
From all of us at Gary K Marshall Insurance Agency, we know pipe issues can happen fast and feel overwhelming. Here’s what to do to protect your home and limit damage:
✅ Step 1: Shut off the water
Turn off your main water valve right away to stop the flow of water.
⚡ Step 2: Stay safe
If water is near outlets, appliances, or your breaker panel, turn off electricity to that area.
🚰 Step 3: Open your faucets
Open all hot and cold faucets to relieve pressure and help drain the system.
🔍 Step 4: Find the problem
Look for the leak or frozen pipe. If a pipe has burst or split, you’ll need a plumber.
🔥 Step 5: Thaw frozen pipes (safely)
If the pipe is frozen:
Use a hair dryer
Place warm towels on the pipe
Use a space heater nearby
❌ Never use an open flame or blowtorch.
🧹 Step 6: Dry the area & take photos
Mop up standing water
Use fans or dehumidifiers
Take clear photos of the damage for insurance purposes
Call the claim in to your insurance company using the claims reporting number on your ID card or policy. A list of most company claim lines can be found here: Company Claims
🛠 Step 7: Repair & inspect
Have your plumber repair the pipe and check for any other weak spots that could cause future problems.
