Before you leave a bad review or how to respond to one online?

Happy Tuesday Delmarva... well, good morning! Get yourself a cup of Joe! I have a big Tuesday Tip for you both business owners and for the consumers too: It is called compassion. Defined by the Merriam-Webster Dictionary: sympathetic consciousness of others' distress together with a desire to alleviate it

Saturday, I highlighted several things that can be done to support small businesses without having to spend money or even going into the business at all. You can use the search feature at the top of our group to find that or any other post here on the group. I have also posted the information on my website here: https://bit.ly/2QVSFmw for you as well. But one major thing that I forgot to mention...what should you do if you had a "not" so good experience? Or if you are a business owner and you get a bad review?

Before we dive into that. The recent announcement regarding the stay at home order has once again started to cause a good amount of panic all over Delmarva. Please be kind to one another and show some "compassion" both here and in public. It may be easy to be a keyboard warrior and spout off online. I see it on so many of the groups and pages I am a member of, maybe that is just how some people are. But our group isn't the place for it and it will not become a place for it either. We are all in this together. So if you are here you are here to help make our community on Delmarva a better place. Negativity will not do that, and it certainly will not fill our feeds or notifications! At least from this group.

One of the biggest things I said that you can do to help local businesses is to leave great reviews. But what if you didn't have a great experience? What if your food was bad, or the receptionist at the business you walked into was anything but welcoming. Before you turn to the keyboard or your phone to let the world know...maybe show some compassion? I love the saying "Kill them with kindness" I take it as a personal challenge when I meet someone having a bad day. I have to try to cheer them up. You never know what that person may have going on or what they are being faced with. Now more than ever, another old saying that I like "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all" can certainly be good advice. Or better yet, ask to speak to the manager or the owner. Make them aware of the situation. Now if that doesn't work then just keep in mind my last old saying for today "What goes around, comes around"

So business owners/managers you walk in the door after getting off and turn the TV on and sit down to relax, talk with your wife, kids or pet Fido and bing! You just get a notification that you got a 1 star review from Mr. Jones and he blast your business. What do you do? Do you hope no one sees it? NOPE...that is absolutely the worst thing you can do. Respond with an offer to try to resolve the issue publically. Don't get into a big debate online...It is silly and isn't going to win you any new fans if they see you lashing out at someone. Be respectful and just simply apologize they were unhappy and offer to fix it. It is all you can do online.

I am really proud of our businesses ratings. But one time out of nowhere I got a 1 start review and no comment. I was dumbfounded...didn't know the person and most problems that come up I am aware of. I reached out and as it turns out a child was using her mom's phone. Somehow they got on a google page that the mother had us pulled up on and hit the 1 star. She apologized and immediately corrected it. Had I responded differently she could have ignored me. Had I ignored it and hoped no one noticed...I am pretty sure it would still be up right now.

I know I am not going to please everyone all of the time. Being in business is hard, trying to juggle the many things that get tossed into your lap as a business owner is sometimes not much fun at all. There are some tough decisions and sometimes even when you think you are making the right one it still feels wrong. So maybe your pizza took a bit long to get there or maybe the person on the other end of the phone wasn't as pleasant as they could have been to you. What is going on right now in this country and here on Delmarva has shown us the very best in people. Our community is coming together to help one another.

So before you leave a bad review try showing just a little compassion. Try and give the business a chance to make things right first.

Supporting Local Businesses!

Happy Saturday Delmarva! So you want to support local businesses! But maybe you aren’t in the position right now to buy anything or maybe you don’t want to get up off the couch, keep reading...I got ya! (it's a bit of a read but it's Saturday)

I would like to address something first: I know I have been going to several places all around Delmarva trying to support as many local businesses as I can. If I haven’t made it to yours keep looking for me. I hope everyone knows that I am taking the COVID-19 situation seriously. I have many friends that are doctors and nurses. I would never want my actions to put them at greater risk. Also even though I am encouraging you to support local businesses I don't want you to do anything that would put you at greater risk either.

I am taking extra precautions to be safe. In my truck I keep lysol wipes and hand sanitizer, don't worry about it they are insured Anytime I go to pick up food I always make sure I am giving everyone more than enough space, social distancing - I don’t like it. But I am doing it and not shaking hands which is really hard for me! After work when I get home I take off my shoes and the clothes go right in the wash. I have washed my hands so much I don’t think the FBI could lift a fingerprint right now. I also keep a nurse on my payroll. So I kid around but I don't think any of this is a joke. I would never want to put myself or my family or my super team that works with me everyday at risk.

All of this and at the same time I really care about our community here on Delmarva. I care about the local businesses and all of the employees too. I know what it is like to wonder how I am going to be able to pull it all together. I have had times when I feel overwhelmed with the stresses of my business, payroll, TAXES, and bills. As much as I try not to do it sometimes I bring that home. This is something most people would have a hard time with on a normal day. This last week or so has been filled with anything but normal days. So when I see the look on the faces of the friendly person at the register, the wonderful employees all over Delmarva or the owners of these establishments. I know what you are feeling. I know how I feel right now.

But I also feel great knowing how so many local people are here coming together! So what can we do to show our support without going in physically:

Google review - Don’t just give them a rating...tell us how great the burger was! Rave about it...

Facebook review - Again don’t just leave a rating...come on I want to taste the Pizza !

Share your experience - Many times this is as easy as sharing your review that you just posted!

Tell your friends - So much of our business comes from referrals and it really is the biggest pat on the back you can give someone if they do a good job.

Like and Share - The more you like and share their content online the more exposure it will get which is another way of helping.

A couple more we can do without going in but if you can spend some money:

Order a meal for a First Responder - Anyone can call ahead to a local business and say that you would like to pay $20 or whatever amount you can for a breakfast or lunch for our deserving First Responders. Many local places have started keeping tabs for them. If not have them start one.

Purchase merchandise/gift cards online - many of our local businesses have websites that you can order and have things shipped to you.

If you are buying something also don’t forget to Leave a Tip - even though some of our servers are there I kind of doubt they are making the same amount doing carry out or curbside pick up as they would waiting tables.

And finally! Share and support this page. Invite your friends. Invite the many local businesses and business owners. This group is something special that might just be what they need to keep it together.

Important Update: COVID-19

Insurance Family,

As we all navigate through this difficult time in our country we have had no choice but to close our offices to the public. We will not be able to accept cash or check payments at this time in our office and your payments must be mailed directly into your insurance company or called in to us or to your company. *We are also discontinuing the use of our drop boxes and again we simply ask that you call or mail the payments to the insurance company or to us during our hours of 9-5. We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause but we are trying to continue to work while maintaining the safety and health of our employees as well as you. Our office hours until the COVID-19 crisis is over will be between 9 AM - 5 PM M-F..

Below we have listed links to claims lines, also numbers if you want to call payments in directly to the insurance carrier during this period of time. If you have been impacted by this crisis please let us know or the company representative when you call your payment in. We will try to work with the insurance company and see if there are any options. Many companies have put in place special billing procedures.

Please know that we truly sorry to have to make this change. We love our interaction with our customers and will miss seeing you.  We will assist you just the same over the phone as if you were in the office. Our office numbers are of course 410-651-1111 or 410-749-2220. If you would like to simply just make your payment after hours there are many options such as your company's mobile app, bill pay, automated phone system. As long as we are able we will check our PO Box but once again we would ask that any payments not be made at this address until this crisis is over and simply mailed directly to the carrier for fastest processing.

Thank you for your understanding during this time,

All of us at Gary Marshall Insurance Agency!

Business Interruption Coverage

Business owners please see below the response from the State of MD regarding Business Interruption Coverage and also you can see below the copied text from our Facebook Business Page regarding this as well.

https://insurance.maryland.gov/Pages/newscenter/NewsDetails.aspx?NR=2020256&fbclid=IwAR2wJ4528kfpxV-9z3TIcy1_8IEOYIcGjM963aOldw0eLBdfImWCtQ6wlO4

Also this is my copied post that I put on our business page and response I have sent to several customers. Business Interruption Coverage.

Hi all I just heard on a call today another insurance agent address this subject and gave out some really bad advice to a number of business people basically suggesting that this could be a covered event for business interruption coverage. Please read below and if you have questions please contact your agent for advice. If you don't have one or don't know who to call we can try to assist.

So here is my take on this...while I am not a claims adjuster and the only way to be certain if a claim is covered is to file the claim and have the company review the policy verbiage as each claim will have it's own situation and also each policy may treat things a bit differently but generally speaking:
COVID-19. Based on my understanding of Business Interruption coverage to apply: there must be a direct physical loss to property. In order for us to have a definite answer we would submit the claim and allow the claims adjuster to show in the policy where there is coverage or it is excluded. This is a pretty good link that covers this topic as well: https://www.law360.com/…/4-key-coronavirus-insurance-covera…
On that link you will see how coverage could apply for work comp as an example. Another possibility of coverage is under a General liability but I think that is going to have to be worked out in the courts. As I type this I just read an article that NJ is trying to force coverage under business interruption coverage to be paid for this event even though it is a standard exclusion. https://www.whiteandwilliams.com/resources-alerts-NJ-Legisl…
***These are only examples and I am not offering advice on any specific policy. If you have questions about coverage or a claim it is always advised to call the claim into the company or review your policy with your agent

Thank you,
David
